LANGKAWI: Umno grassroots supporters here have been saddened by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to contest for the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the 14th General Election (GE14).
Some even described his decision as an act of betrayal against the party that he led for many years.
Sungai Dedak Umno branch chief Saad Salleh said many members used to look up to Dr Mahathir but he had hurt their feelings.
Kampung Bayas Umno branch chief, Zainon Saidin said Dr Mahathir’s age would not render him capable of repeating the same success he achieved as the country’s top leader.
“Dr Mahathir is a leader who we once respected for developing Langkawi but we need to remember that happened when he was an Umno leader,” he said, adding Umno grassroots members in Langkawi were sad because Dr Mahathir was willing to work with the DAP to topple the current government led by Barisan Nasional (BN).
Yesterday, Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail announced Dr Mahathir’s candidacy for Langkawi parliamentary.
