KUALA LUMPUR: Pas distancing itself would only reduce the public’s support towards Pas and Pakatan Harapan in the coming general election.
Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said this in a blog post on Tuesday.
“Whether or not Pas cooperates with Umno, its participation in the coming 14th General Election will still weaken support to both Pakatan and Pas themselves.
“This has always been Pas’s fight. It was never for race or religion. It was to weaken Malays,” he said in the blog.
Dr Mahathir, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president, pointed out that Pas had performed poorly in the past elections when it stood alone. When the party worked together with strong allies, it fared well.
He added that in the 1959 general election, the first election after Independence, Pas only won 13 Parliamentary seats out of 104 contested – although it managed to conquer Kelantan and Terengganu.
Right after the general election Pas faced internal conflict in Terengganu which led to the collapse of the Pas-led state government in Terengganu and was then replaced by the Alliance Party.
“Pas then performed poorly in the 1964 and 1969 general elections and won only nine seats and 12 seats, respectively.
“After the 1969 racial riot, Pas rejoined Barisan Nasional (BN) and won 14 seats.
“The Islamist party failed to do well in the next three consecutive general elections. In 1978, 1982 and 1986, their performance deteriorated.
“The party only won five seats in 1978, five in 1982 and only one in 1986,” he said.
Pas then cooperated with Semangat 46, an Umno splinter party formed by Tengku Razaleigh.
“Pas won seven seats in 1990 and 1995 respectively.
“The party then worked with DAP and PKR in 1999 to form Barisan Alternatif, and won 27 seats.
“In 2004, when DAP pulled out from Barisan Alternatif, Pas only won seven seats.
“In 2008, Pas won 23 seats and 21 seats in 2013. This is all facts and official records,” he added.
Observing their track record, it does not seem that Pas will fare well if it chooses to go on its own.
“It may look like Pas is contesting against Umno but they are actually handing victory over to Umno,” he said.
