KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) has dismissed allegations that it is a proxy of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Its secretary-general, Loretto Sipin Padua Jr, was responding to STAR president Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan's statement that Mahathir may win in the next general election (GE14) with the help of Warisan, and rule Sabah with an iron fist.
"None of the office bearers in Warisan is associated with Mahathir. Nor does Mahathir have any connection to, or any control of, the party.
"(Jeffrey’s) allegation is merely a desperate attempt to gain support from Kadazandusun and Murut voters in the interior of Sabah," he said in a statement.
Loretto added that nobody in Sabah fears Tun Mahathir, who is also president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), as he is a 91-year-old ordinary citizen.
He said he reckons that Jeffrey is still living in Mahathir's shadow, as he was detained by the latter under the Internal Security Act for allegedly trying to pull Sabah out of the Federation.
"If Mahathir does indeed want to control Sabah by using a proxy, he would not want to waste much time with Warisan, considering that PPBM is, in fact, already with Pakatan Harapan," Loretto added.
Meanwhile, on the accusation that Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) left the United Sabah Alliance because of Warisan, Loretto said that his party had nothing to do with the breakup.
Nevertheless, he said Warisan is honoured to be looked up to by Jeffrey as being capable of influencing the seasoned and knowledgeable leaders of PCS.
