IPOH: An 18-year-old plunged to his death from the sixth floor of a Taiping shopping mall on New Year’s Eve in an apparent suicide.

Police received a call from the public on the discovery of the youth’s body near the mall's loading bay at about 8.25pm on Sunday.

"We found a knife in the (youth’s) right hand and another one near the scene. A chair, which is believed to have been used by the youth, was found on the sixth floor of the building.

"(Reviews) of the mall's closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings revealed that the youth had parked his car on the sixth floor before alighting from the vehicle.

"Footage (from another angle) showed the youth falling onto the road behind the mall," acting Taiping district police chief Supt Razlam Ab Hamid said in a statement.

He said the youth sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.

"The body was sent to the Taiping Hospital and post-mortem results revealed that the cause of the death is consistent with a fall from a (great) height," added Razlam.
