KUCHING: World No 1 Lee Chong Wei did not disappoint a packed house at the Perpaduan Stadium in Kuching, when he cruised into the second round of the Malaysia Open with a convincing win over England’s Rajiv Ouseph on Wednesday.
Surprised by the huge turnout, Chong Wei, who is gunning his 12th Malaysia Open crown chalked up a 21-16, 21-18 win, extending his winning streak over the English shuttler to 6-0.
Chong Wei, who already has a title under his belt this season (All England) is hoping to continue his momentum all the way to the end on Sunday.
The 35-year-old three-time Olympic silver medallist will face another veteran Hu Yun of Hong Kong next for a place in the quarter-finals.
Also through to the second round is reigning Olympic champion Chen Long, who thumped another Hong Kong shuttler Wei Nan 21-4, 21-9.
The 2015 champion, will play compatriot Huang Yuxiang next.
Meanwhile, in the women’s singles, Goh Jin Wei was made to sweat before carving out a 21-15, 20-22, 21-17 win over Indonesian qualifier Yulia Yosephine Susanto.
The 17-year-old former world junior champion, however, will not get her wish to play India’s P.V. Sindhu in the second round after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallist lost 18-21, 21-19, 21-17 to China’s Chen Yufei.
Two other local shuttlers Sonia Cheah Su Ya and Lim Yin Fun failed to advance to the next stage.
