Sunway Lagoon’s Nights of Fright promises to be one of the scariest experiences of your life, writes Hanna Hussein
It’s almost dusk, and any minute now Sunway Lagoon will open its doors for visitors to experience the park at night for its special (more like spooky) festival of fear, the Nights of Fright!
The front gate is now crowded with visitors eager to get in. As the clock ticks 7.30pm, the hideous- looking staff welcome us in through the gate.
Happening every weekend, only in October, this is the fifth consecutive year of Nights of Fright which Sunway Lagoon promises will be the scariest year ever!
Scaredy-cat as I am, I face my fear tonight (not alone, obviously) by exploring the ghastly festival. What about you? Dare to join me?
ISLANDS OF THE DOLLS
My friends and I kick off the ghastly night by first entering the Islands of the Dolls, said to be the highlight of the night. Well, the regular line is super long, Thankfully we had got the Express Lane pass.
Oh, the perks of getting to go on a shorter line and avoiding the long queues. Less than 10 minutes later, it’s already our turn to go in. Only 10 people are allowed to go in at a time.
Of course, before we enter, we are first briefed about the do’s and dont’s. “The ghosts won’t touch you and there is no touching the ghosts! Don’t run in there, just follow the person in front of you,” the staff advises while handing the person at the front a rope, which everyone has to hold.
The Island of Dolls is said to be an accidental tourist attraction in Mexico which became famous due to a tragic disaster. We have to walk along a dark eerie garden, caves and cages, where there are lots of scary not-too-cute looking dolls hanging everywhere, peeking from the bushes and even floating in the rivers.
It is said the lost soul of a poor girl who met her fate too soon in strange circumstances possesses the dolls. Locals say that the dolls move their heads and arms and even open their eyes. Some witnesses claim they have heard the dolls whispering to each other, while others who were on a boat near the island said the dolls lured them to come down to the island.
We spot little girls in white dresses running and laughing here on the island. Oh, if you’re not a fan of dolls, this is definitely not for you. But, if you are brave enough, look the dolls in the eyes, if you dare.
Scare Verdict: 3/5
Next on our scare list is Dystopia, the Hospital Hell which is said to be Tokyo Andromeda Psychiatric Asylum.
Inside are squalor, human misery, oppression, disease and overcrowding. Plus, I know one thing haunted hospitals have in common: The ghosts of the past lingering in their halls.
Here in Dystopia, you’ll be exposed to horrifying patient treatments that are frightful to hear and daunting to see in the year 2147, where patients are kept in separate rooms while the doctor determines their treatment.
These patients are put through more pain instead of being treated. Padded rooms isolate them and their muffled cries. Victims who cannot withstand the torture are left to die on bloody mattresses and their souls are trapped in the beds to endlessly haunt visitors.
Seriously, the haunted hospital is super realistic and daunting. Go a second time? I’ll probably not!
Scare Verdict: 4/5
DAY OF THE DEAD
There is a saying that when you die, everything grows dark around the edges until there is only darkness. That is exactly how we feel upon entering the Day of the Dead haunted house.
Before we enter, we are each given 3D glasses. Once inside, we will be exposed to the phenomenon of the life of the dead, and those with glasses will be able to see it. Inside, we will have to manoeuvre in darkness as we make our way to the funeral room where we’ll see widows and children mourning the deceased.
Supernatural white heads keep popping up, and I scream, every time! Creepy!
If you dare to enter, stay alert as those with a “low” spirit might be spotted by the dead souls who always yearn for some company in the realm of the dead.
Scare Verdict: 4.5/5
If you had watched the movie Ouija, maybe you can relate to this one. Ouija is a board game which can call the spirits, and it has spooked people for decades because it is claimed the game is a direct link to spirits from the world beyond. Many have witnessed their friends moving the planchette on the board while others swear some outer-worldly interference is controlling the movement!
Here in this haunted house of Ouija, you’ll definitely be chilled to your bones as you will experience a scary seance in the mysterious and long abandoned attic of E.J. Bond Esquire’s home.
Scare Verdict: 3/5
PONTIANAK VS POCONG
Finished with one section, we head to the next located nearer to the Scream Park. The first ride we head to is the Pontianak vs Pocong.
Okay, I have to admit: Pontianak scares me the most. I don’t know about you but this may be one of the scariest haunted houses I will be experiencing tonight and I will probably have trouble sleeping the whole week!
The haunted home reveals a bloody affair of a lover returning as a Pontianak and the unfaithful husband, Pocong, as they seek what is rightfully theirs in a classic battle of evil vs evil. Of course, inside you’ll definitely be scared and terrified by Pontianak and Pocong popping unexpectedly everywhere.
Scare Verdict: 4.5 /5
Can’t get enough of the Walking Dead? Why not experience the zombie invasion yourself at the Zombie Apocalypse?
There is no escape once you set foot in the land of the undead. Inside, you will witness the undead creeping up everywhere and you have nowhere to run. But don’t worry, they may scare you but they won’t bite and infect you if you don’t touch them.
Scare Verdict: 3.5/5
HORRORWOOD STUDIOS & GHOSTBUSTERS
Are you familiar with Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees? These two horror icons of Hollywood will come to life here at Horrorwood Studios!
Inside the studio, you will also meet other scary movie characters of all time.
Another haunted house is the Ghostbusters Adventure Live, which is available during the day as well as night. Have you watched the new Ghostbusters movie? Well, you will be going through exactly the same scene, wandering through the iconic Firehouse HQ and other infamous ghost locations such as Aldridge Mansion and Seward Street Subway.
Scare Verdict: 3.5/5
NIGHT FUN RIDES
Besides the eight Haunted Houses, there are also five theme-scare zones scattered across the park, where you will encounter scary things when you roam the area.
Well, the best thing about Nights of Fright is that you can experience more than the haunted houses as there are also many fun rides open during the night including Tomahawk, Pirate’s Revenge, Lost City of Gold Scream Coaster, and Colorado Splash. Of course, the rides have a different feel. It’s more spooky at night, seriously!
There are also some entertaining and cool stage performance shows you can catch during certain hours at certain areas. For more info on performance timing, do get your hands on the map brochure.
Another awesome thing at the festival is the activity booth. My favourite is the Fortune Teller. For just RM30, you can ask the Chinese Fortune Teller to see your future. You’ll be surprised at the accurate things they can tell about you. Psstt. check your time of birth before you come for your reading.
