They may be two of the country’s influential fashion icons but when it comes to travelling and packing, Deborah Henry and Vivy Yusof could not be more different, writes Syida Lizta Amirul Ihsan

THE LIGHT PACKER
Deborah Henry, 32

Miss Malaysia Universe 2007 and Founder, Fugee School

WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING TO DO WHEN PACKING?
Deciding what to bring and planning my outfits according to events. But I have learnt the trick of packing pieces that I can mix and match to create different looks.

WHY DO YOU NEVER OVERPACK?
Because I like to travel light. You just need the skills to know what to pack without missing out of your OOTDs.

WHAT ARE YOUR TRAVELLING ESSENTIALS?
Lip balm (Vaseline), flat iron for my hair, concealer and blusher.

WHAT ARE YOUR TRAVELLING PET PEEVES?
I absolutely hate being in a big tour group (do not wave that tour guide flag at me!) Why? It’s called the tourist trap — the food, shops, sights will be typical and you’ll probably get ripped off.

WHAT IS YOUR PACKING ADVICE?
Pack clothes according to the order you will wear them. Your clothes on your first day of arrival should be on top. This way, you won’t be making a mess fishing clothes from the bottom of your suitcase.

THE OVERPACKER
Vivy Yusof, 30, Chief creative officer and co-founder, FashionValet; founder, The dUCk Group

WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING TO DO WHEN PACKING?
Which tudung to bring along to match my clothes. I usually bring double the number of tudung (dUCk, of course) than I need to wear. This allows me to change my mind. Different lighting delivers different effects on the tudung.

WHY DO YOU ALWAYS OVERPACK?
Because I have been in so many instances that I said, “I wish I brought that”, so I have decided that it is better to travel with more bags than be caught empty-handed when you need something.

WHAT ARE YOUR TRAVELLING ESSENTIALS?
Make-up remover, deodorant, lip balm.

WHAT ARE YOUR TRAVELLING PET PEEVES?
When I don’t bring enough clothes for the things I am supposed to go to.

WHAT IS YOUR PACKING ADVICE?
Roll your clothes, put your shoes in shoe bags and stuff small things inside your handbags. And never forget to purchase extra baggage allowance in advance.
