IT has been a good year for gaming so far. We’ve seen major game releases such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, and many more awesome games. I’m sure many are looking forward to something new. Now, we have a whole new list of games to look forward to. Aiman Maulana lists what to look out for this month.
RIME is an upcoming third person adventure game with puzzle elements. Developed by Tequila Works, the game follows the story of a young boy who wakes up on a mysterious island after a storm. In that island, it’s filled with wild animals, ruins, and a massive tower that plays an integral role in the story. The boy needs to escape the island and a curse that’s bound to affect him.
Initially, the game was known as Echoes Of The Siren and it was a project backed by Microsoft, which eventually bailed on the game and the funding for the project went to Sony for an exclusive release on the PlayStation 4. Then in 2016, Tequila Works announced that they have re-acquired the rights to the game and has since decided that it will be available on multiple platforms.
RiME will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on May 26 2017. A Nintendo Switch release will be happening some time in Q3 2017 but no official release date for that has been announced yet.
2. Friday The 13th: The Game
FOLLOWING the recent success of multiplayer horror games, developers IllFonic and Gun Media are entering the fray with an adaptation of a familiar horror movie series. It’s a semi-open world multiplayer game where up to seven players take the role of counselors for Camp Crystal Lake to survive against a single player who takes control of the infamous masked slasher Jason Voorhees.
It is a semi-open world game in the sense that players actually have quite of area to explore, which can trigger certain events such as retrieving Tommy Jarvis, a recurring character from the Friday The 13th movie series. Jason’s goal is to subdue all the other players while the camp counsellors will have to either escape the camp or survive until the timer runs out.
Initially, the game was developed as Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp. Gun Media went into talks with Friday The 13th’s director Sean S. Cunningham and managed to secure a licence to turn into a game. The game was then funded with the help of a Kickstarter campaign, which raised an estimated US$2.1 million (RM9.13 million). The game will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on May 26.
THIS VR space adventure game set on a hostile alien plant. You are on a mission to retrieve scientists who are studying an anomaly near Jupiter, when a sudden rupture sends you and the scientists’ space station crashing into another planet.
Separated from everyone else, you must use holographic logs scattered throughout the area to find the scientists and eventually escape. It won’t be an easy journey, as you will be meeting hostile alien life forms. You can play through the story via Single Play mode or a two-player Co-Op mode.
The game is developed by Impulse Gear, a small independent development studio based in San Francisco. They wanted to create a unique and accurate VR experience and thus have come up with the PSVR Aim Controller. This controller allows for precise and realistic aiming with direct 1-to-1 tracking. In other words, you would aim in Farpoint using the controller as you would in real life.
Farpoint will be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4, and requires having the PlayStation VR in order to play, on May 16.
4. Injustice 2
THE sequel to the fighting game featuring superheroes and supervillains from DC Universe, Injustice 2’s story begins after the defeat of High Councilor Superman. Batman and his team of insurgents are struggling to rebuild society against the remnants of Superman’s regime. At the same time, a new group of villains under the command of Gorilla Grodd known as “The Society” surfaces.
The Society’s goal is to take over the world and they are eliminating any superheroes that stand in their way. With no other choice, Batman is forced to gather a new group of superheroes to combat this villainous group, even if it means gathering those who were once under Superman’s old regime.
Producer Adam Urbano noted that the idea of creating a fighting game that utilises a role-playing game progression system has been thrown around since Midway Games, Mortal Kombat’s original publisher, was still around. This came to be known as the Gear System, which is a loot-dropping system that rewards players with costume pieces and equipment that can not only change character appearance, but also improve their stats and skills.
Injustice 2 will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android, and iOS on May 16 2017.
THIS is a first-person action-adventure game. It takes place in an alternate timeline where US President John F. Kennedy is still alive and has focused funding into space programmes. Players take control of Morgan Yu, who is currently exploring the moon-orbiting space station Talos I, where research into a hostile alien race known as “The Typhon” is being conducted.
Prey is not a sequel to the original 2006 game of the same name. This is actually a re-imagining of the game by Bethesda and Arkane Studios. In fact, Arkane Studios have created Prey to be a spiritual successor to the popular game System Shock, which means that players will have several potential means of progressing through the game.
Prey will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on May 5 2017.
