Spin city: Cantonese Opera

COLOURFUL costumes. Distinct make-up. Melodramatic stories. And haunting music. All these elements make up Cantonese opera. Yet, this unique art form, once so popular, is slipping away, overtaken in popularity by other more contemporary art forms.

The Actors Studio, through its Teater Rakyat programme, will attempt to revive the glorious days of Cantonese Opera and in doing so, open it up to a wider audience.

Brought to life will be excerpts from three well-known Chinese classics – Dream Of The Red Chamber’s ‘Reunion in the Dream’ (Wan Kwok Lei Han Tin), The Mirror Reunion’s ‘Seducing the General’ (Chut Gong Sap Joi Ling Fa Mong) and General Dik Ching’s ‘In Pursuit of the General’ (Deik Ching Zhi Zhui Fu).

Although it’s all going to be performed in Cantonese, there’ll still be a brief introduction on each piece in English and Cantonese.

The show will be directed by Kam Sin Kiew, a Hong Kong native who has lived and breathed Cantonese Opera all her life, and has performed with great names in Hong Kong and around the world.
